Part-Time Registered Practical Nurse Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Practical Nurse will function in close collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary health care professionals within the West Durham Family Health Team (WDFHT).  As a vital member of the team, the primary focus of the Registered Practical Nurse is to provide comprehensive health services in conjunction with all health care professionals. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registered with the Ontario College of Nurses
  • Min. 5 years experience as a registered practical nurse in a physician’s office or hospital.  Experience working in a group medical practice is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Equipment knowledge – minor surgical equipment, scale, autoclave, auto-scope, ear syringing, etc.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Procedures

  • Prepare patient for examination
  • Administer and record necessary immunization and allergy injections
  • Administer procedures such as skin scraping, throat swabs, TB skin test, etc.
  • Remove sutures, complete skin and wound dressing and ear syringing
  • Accurately complete requisitions
  • Perform blood pressure follow-ups
  • Arrange community services for patients

2. CDM Programs and Health Promotion

  • Initiate appropriate action in response to changing patient needs and collaborate with the inter professional team to assist patients
  • Arrange appropriate follow-up, referrals, appointments and investigations according to established procedures.
    2. Record Keeping
  • Encounter data, phone conversations, immunizations, etc.
  • Collect accurate and comprehensive patient-related information and document this information in the electronic clinic management system.
  • Prepare quarterly reports for the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC)

3. Telephone Advice

  • Triage patient phone calls that require a level of medical expertise beyond the secretary’s scope.  Determine urgency of patient request
  • Handle patient advice calls, discuss test results, provide instruction and patient education regarding health promotion and illness protection

4. Supplies

  • Keep examination rooms stocked with required supplies
  • Order supplies on a regular and timely basis from approved vendors
  • Check all medical samples and dispose of them in proper manner if outdated
  • Responsible for the disposal of hazardous materials
  • Sterilizes all instruments for minor surgery

5. Miscellaneous

  • Assists in training and development of new staff
  • As part of a team, communicates any ideas or concerns and participates in problem solving when necessary
  • Willingness to routinely participate in staff meetings
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff members and students
  • Work with the team to develop collaborative approaches to family practice for the management of clinical problems in primary care
  • Establish, promote and maintain good relations with patients and staff
  • Support and maintain the goals and objectives of the West Durham Family Health Team
  • Communicate effectively with patients, team members and external agencies involved in the patient circle of care
  • Ensure cleanliness of all clinic areas including the nursing/POD workstation, examination rooms, washrooms, meeting rooms, etc.
  • Refreshes and prepares patient examination rooms before and after patient encounters
  • Knowledge of computers and software eg. Internet, CDM program, MS Office, Word, etc.
